The Rise of Independent Filmmaking in Malaysia resulting from Innovative Funding Avenues (and the Ultimate Beneficiaries)

I am undertaking the Master of Arts Screen Business at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and in the first semester, for the International Screen Media Policy & Finance subject, my fellow students and I were given the task to produce a colloquium on a topic that would explore screen media policy in the Asia Pacific. I’d like to thank our lecturer Dr. Pieter Aquilla for her insights to understanding screen media policy and financial budgeting in this topic.

Our cohort of 8-10 students came together as peers, met guest lecturers like Michael Lim, Anupam Sharma, Esther Peh of Warner Brothers Discovery Singapore. AFTRS often collaborates closely with the Asian Broadcasting Union to produce capacity building workshops and forums.

In devising ideas for this colloquium, I explored an area that was of much interest to me personally. The art of making a film with a very low budget.
